■ 1. 条件を表す接続詞

unless「〜しない限り／もし〜でなければ」（= if…not）
　You won’t pass the exam unless you study harder.
　＝ You won’t pass the exam if you don’t study harder.

provided[providing] (that)「〜という条件で／もし〜ならば」：契約や規則めいた硬い条件を表す
　You may borrow my car provided that you fill up the tank afterwards.

*注意：unless は「〜でなければ」という否定の条件をすでに含んでいるため、unless…notのように否定を重ねる誤りに注意。

■ 2. 結果を表す表現

so ＋ 形容詞／副詞 ＋ that S+V「とても〜なので…だ」
　The music was so loud that we couldn’t hear each other talk.

such ＋ (a/an) ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 名詞 ＋ that S+V「とても〜な…なので…だ」
　It was such a difficult question that nobody could answer it.

so that S+V（助動詞can/will/mayなどを伴う）「…するように／…できるように」：目的を表すことが多い
　She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.

講義ポイント①
so の後ろは形容詞・副詞（単独）、such の後ろは（a/an＋）形容詞＋名詞、と覚える。名詞があるかどうかで判別する。

■ 3. byとuntilの区別（前置詞・接続詞）

どちらも「時」に関わるが、意味がまったく異なる頻出の識別ポイント。

by「〜までに」：期限。その時点までに動作が完了することを表す（一回的な動作の動詞と相性がよい）
　Please submit the report by Friday.（金曜日までに提出してください＝金曜が締め切り）

until[till]「〜まで（ずっと）」：継続。その時点まで動作や状態が継続することを表す（継続的な動詞と相性がよい）
　I will wait here until you come back.（あなたが戻るまでここで待っている＝ずっと待ち続ける）

byもuntilも前置詞・接続詞の両方の用法を持つ（untilはthat節ではなくSVを直接続ける）。

前置詞：by the deadline／until midnight
接続詞：by the time S+V（第26講で既出）／until S+V

問1　正解：① unless

「もっと努力しない限り成功しないだろう」＝ if you don’t put in more effort と同じ意味。unlessが正解。

問2　正解：② so

空欄の直後が boring という形容詞単独なので、soが正しい。such の後ろには名詞が必要。

問3　正解：① such

空欄の後ろが a boring lecture という〈a＋形容詞＋名詞〉なので、suchが正しい。

問4　正解：④ by the time

空欄の後ろに the meeting starts という〈S＋V〉が続いているため、接続詞のby the timeが正しい（①byは前置詞なので後ろに名詞が必要）。「会議が始まるまでに、すべての書類の準備ができていることを確認してください」。
