【体系基礎英文法　第23講】前置詞＋関係代名詞と関係副詞

■ 1. 先行詞が前置詞の目的語になっている場合の2つの表現

先行詞が関係代名詞節の中で前置詞の目的語になっている場合、前置詞は関係代名詞の直前に置くか、文末に残すかの2通りの位置がある。

This is the house in which I was born.（フォーマル）
This is the house which I was born in.（前置詞を後ろに残す）

*that を使う場合は前置詞を必ず後ろに残す（that の直前に前置詞は置けない）。

■ 2. 関係副詞

先行詞（場所・時・理由・方法）＋〈前置詞＋関係代名詞〉は、1語の関係副詞（where, when, why, how）に置き換えられる。

先行詞の種類	関係副詞	対応する〈前置詞＋関係代名詞〉
場所	where	in/at/on which
時	when	in/at/on which
理由	why	for which
方法	how	in which（先行詞the wayと同時使用不可）

関係副詞の後ろには、名詞要素の欠落がない「完全な文」が続く（関係代名詞との最大の違い）。

This is the house where I was born.
　where I was born は完全文（in which を1語に圧縮したもの）

■ 4. 解答と構造解説＆講義注釈

問1　正解：② where

先行詞 the hotel（場所）＋ we stayed（完全文）という構造。at which に相当する関係副詞 where が正しい。

問2　正解：② when

先行詞 the day（時）＋ we first met at the conference（完全文）。on which に相当する関係副詞 when が正しい。

問3　正解：① why

先行詞 the reason（理由）＋ she decided to change her career（完全文）。for which に相当する関係副詞 why が正しい。

問4　正解：① how

「この機械がどう動くか」を説明する名詞節を作る関係副詞how。先行詞the wayを伴わずhow単独で使われている。

問5　正解：③ that

先行詞the apartment building（場所）だが、動詞live inのinが省略されずに残ると考えると、前置詞を残す形が必要。関係代名詞thatは前置詞を後ろに残す用法で使え、live inのinを省略した口語的な形として成立する（where も可だが、選択肢内でthatが対応する構造として適切）。
