When railway construction swept across the English countryside in the 1840s, it provoked deeply mixed reactions among landowners. On one hand, rail lines dramatically increased the value of surrounding land and allowed agricultural goods to reach distant urban markets far more quickly than before. On the other hand, large landowners frequently resisted having tracks cut directly through their estates, fearing that the visible presence of smoke-belching trains would spoil the carefully cultivated appearance of their parks and gardens. Rather than opposing the railways outright, however, many landowners used their objections as leverage, demanding that companies pay inflated prices for land, construct hidden tunnels to keep trains out of sight, or build stations conveniently located near their own property. This pattern reveals that resistance to industrial modernization was rarely a simple rejection of progress; it was frequently a calculated negotiation aimed at extracting maximum benefit while minimizing visible disruption to a treasured way of life.

“This pattern reveals that resistance to industrial modernization was rarely a simple rejection of progress; it was frequently a calculated negotiation aimed at extracting maximum benefit while minimizing visible disruption to a treasured way of life.”

文構造: [S: This pattern(名詞句)] [V: reveals(動詞)] [O: that resistance to industrial modernization was rarely a simple rejection of progress(名詞節)]; [S(セミコロン以降): it(代名詞、=resistance)] [V: was(動詞)] [C: frequently a calculated negotiation(名詞句)] ← [過去分詞句: aimed at(過去分詞) extracting maximum benefit while minimizing visible disruption to a treasured way of life(前置詞句+分詞構文)]
品詞: aimed at(過去分詞、negotiationを後置修飾、「〜を狙った」)、extracting/minimizing(いずれも動名詞、前置詞at/whileの目的語または分詞構文)、while(接続詞、同時進行の2つの動作を対比)

Many landowners ( used / their objections / as leverage / demanding / that companies / pay / inflated prices for land / construct / hidden tunnels / to keep trains out of sight ).

Many landowners used their objections as leverage, demanding that companies pay inflated prices for land, construct hidden tunnels to keep trains out of sight.

文構造: [S: Many landowners(名詞句)] [V: used(動詞)] [O: their objections(名詞句)] [as leverage(前置詞句)], [分詞構文: demanding(現在分詞) that companies pay … construct …(名詞節、demandの目的語)]
品詞: demanding(分詞構文、意味上の主語Many landownersと能動関係)、that companies pay/construct(demandの目的語となる名詞節。

  1. Rail lines dramatically increased the value of surrounding land, (allow) agricultural goods to reach distant markets more quickly.
  2. Large landowners feared that the visible presence of smoke-belching trains would spoil the (careful) cultivated appearance of their parks.
  3. Landowners demanded that companies (build) stations conveniently located near their own property.

  1. 正解: allowing
文構造: [S: Rail lines(名詞句)] [V: increased(動詞)] [O: the value(名詞句)], [分詞構文: allowing(現在分詞) agricultural goods to reach distant markets more quickly]
    品詞: allowing(現在分詞、分詞構文、結果を表す)
allow O to do「Oが〜するのを可能にする」の形。
  2. 正解: carefully
    文構造: [O: the carefully(副詞) cultivated(過去分詞) appearance(名詞句)]
    品詞: carefully(副詞、過去分詞cultivatedを修飾)
  3. 正解: build
文構造: [O: that companies build(動詞原形) stations conveniently located near their own property(名詞節)]
    品詞: build(原形、demandの目的語となるthat節内の動詞)
    解説: demand that S build…

  1. According to the passage, what positive effect did railway construction have on land values?
    (A) It dramatically decreased the value of surrounding land.
    (B) It dramatically increased the value of surrounding land.
    (C) It had no measurable effect on land values.
    (D) It only affected land values in urban areas, not the countryside.
  2. Which of the following best paraphrases “resistance to industrial modernization was rarely a simple rejection of progress”?
    (A) Landowners almost always completely rejected all forms of industrial progress.

    (C) Landowners never resisted railway construction under any circumstances.
    (D) Progress was rejected only by people living in cities, not landowners.
  3. What does the passage suggest landowners sometimes gained by objecting to railway construction?
    (A) Complete cancellation of all railway projects on their land.
    (B) Higher prices for their land, hidden tunnels, or conveniently located stations.
    (C) Ownership of the railway companies themselves.
    (D) Permanent immunity from any future construction projects.

  1. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “rail lines dramatically increased the value of surrounding land”
  2. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “resistance to industrial modernization was rarely a simple rejection of progress; it was frequently a calculated negotiation”
  3. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “demanding that companies pay inflated prices for land, construct hidden tunnels to keep trains out of sight, or build stations conveniently located near their own property”
