1. 連鎖関係代名詞節の基本構造

関係代名詞の直後に「I think」「we believe」のような〈判断する主体を示すSV〉を挿入した形を連鎖関係代名詞節と呼ぶ。

(1) the applicant who is qualified「資格のある応募者」 (2) the applicant who I believe is qualified「資格があると私が考える応募者」 ☞ I believe を who の直後に加えることで「私の考えでは」というニュアンスが加わる。

*主格の関係代名詞は連鎖関係代名詞節では省略可能。(2)のwhoを省略した the applicant I believe is qualified も自然な英語。

2. 〈名詞＋前置詞＋whom/which to do〉の変形理解

(例) I need a mentor with whom to discuss my career. 「キャリアについて相談する（ための）メンターが必要だ」

• I discuss my career with a mentor.（文）
• → a mentor with whom I discuss my career（関係詞節）
• → a mentor with whom to discuss my career 　*I discuss が to discuss に変わったと考える。

【問題1】解答：① who we believe が連鎖して挿入された形。節内では has の主語となるため主格の who が正しい（連鎖関係代名詞節でも whom にはならない）。

【問題2】解答：② with consult about the contract dispute with a lawyer（弁護士と相談する）という元の文から、with が前置詞として残る。a lawyer with whom to consult という形。

【問題3】解答：① who the police suspect が連鎖して挿入。節内では is lying の主語となるため主格の who が正しい。
