In the mid-twentieth century, engineers designing airplane cockpits relied on a single guiding assumption: if they built a cockpit to fit the average pilot, it would comfortably fit the vast majority of pilots. Acting on this assumption, they carefully measured hundreds of pilots and calculated average values for dimensions such as height, arm length, and chest circumference. It came as a shock, then, when a young researcher decided to check individual pilots against these averages and discovered that not a single pilot matched the average on every dimension simultaneously. Being average overall, it turned out, required being unusual in at least one respect. Once the military abandoned the idea of designing for an imaginary average person and instead built adjustable seats, pedals, and straps, pilot performance improved dramatically. The lesson extends well beyond aviation: whenever an institution builds its systems around an average drawn from a large population, it risks designing something that fits nobody in particular.

“whenever an institution builds its systems around an average drawn from a large population, it risks designing something that fits nobody in particular”
文構造: [副詞節: whenever(接続詞) an institution builds its systems around an average drawn from a large population], [S: it(代名詞、=an institution)] [V: risks(動詞)] [O: designing(動名詞) something that fits nobody in particular(関係代名詞節)]
品詞: whenever(複合関係副詞、「〜するときはいつでも」)、drawn from(過去分詞句、an averageを後置修飾、「〜から導き出された」)、risks doing(risk+動名詞「〜する危険を冒す」)、that fits(関係代名詞節、somethingを修飾)

It came as a shock, then, ( when / a young researcher / decided to check / individual pilots / against these averages / and / discovered / that / not a single pilot / matched the average / on every dimension / simultaneously ).
It came as a shock, then, when a young researcher decided to check individual pilots against these averages and discovered that not a single pilot matched the average on every dimension simultaneously.
文構造: [形式主語: It(代名詞)] [V: came(動詞)] [C: as a shock(前置詞句)], [when節: when(接続詞) a young researcher decided to check individual pilots against these averages and discovered that not a single pilot matched the average on every dimension simultaneously]
when節内構造: [S: a young researcher(名詞句)] [V1: decided to check(動詞句)] [O1: individual pilots against these averages] and [V2: discovered(動詞)] [O2: that not a single pilot matched the average…(名詞節)]
品詞: decided to check(decide to do、不定詞の名詞用法)、discovered that(that節を目的語にとる動詞)、not a single pilot「一人のパイロットも〜ない」(強い否定を表す表現)
When節の中でand によってdecided…

- Engineers relied on a single (guide) assumption when designing airplane cockpits.
- Being average overall, it turned out, (require) being unusual in at least one respect.
- Once the military abandoned the idea of designing for an imaginary average person, pilot performance (improve) dramatically.
文構造: [O: a single guiding(現在分詞) assumption(名詞句)]
品詞: guiding(現在分詞、assumptionを前置修飾、「導きとなる」という能動的な意味)
文構造: [S: Being average overall(動名詞句=主語)], it turned out(挿入句), [V: required(動詞)] [O: being unusual(動名詞) in at least one respect]
品詞: required(過去形、文全体の時制はturned outという過去形に合わせる)、being average/being unusual(いずれも動名詞、それぞれ主語・目的語の働き)
文構造: [when節: Once the military abandoned…], [S: pilot performance(名詞句)] [V: improved(動詞)] [副詞: dramatically]
品詞: improved(過去形、主節の動詞)

- According to the passage, what assumption did engineers originally rely on when designing airplane cockpits?
(A) That every pilot should have a custom-built cockpit.
(B) That a cockpit built to fit the average pilot would comfortably fit the vast majority of pilots.
(C) That cockpit design had no effect on pilot performance.
(D) That only the tallest pilots should be allowed to fly. - Which of the following best paraphrases “not a single pilot matched the average on every dimension simultaneously”?
(A) Every pilot matched the average on every dimension at the same time.
(B) No pilot matched the average across all dimensions at once.
(C) Only one pilot in the entire study matched the average exactly.
(D) The average measurements were later found to be completely inaccurate. - What happened after the military abandoned the idea of designing for an average pilot, according to the passage?
(A) Pilot performance declined significantly.
(B) The military stopped building cockpits altogether.
(C) Adjustable seats, pedals, and straps were introduced, and pilot performance improved dramatically.
(D) The average pilot was finally identified and used as the new design standard.
本文該当箇所: “if they built a cockpit to fit the average pilot, it would comfortably fit the vast majority of pilots”
本文該当箇所: “not a single pilot matched the average on every dimension simultaneously”
本文該当箇所: “instead built adjustable seats, pedals, and straps, pilot performance improved dramatically”
