Every summer, my parents sent my brother and me back to Japan, determined that we would grow up fluent in both languages and comfortable in both cultures. In America, we were expected to excel academically and behave like model students; in Japan, we were expected to read social situations correctly, something neither of us had been explicitly taught to do. I often clashed with the unspoken rules of my Japanese classroom, wearing outdoor shoes indoors or addressing an older classmate too casually, mistakes that seemed invisible to me but instantly noticeable to everyone else. My parents eventually settled on a simple motto that captured what they hoped for us: be entirely American while in America, and entirely Japanese while in Japan. Looking back, I now understand that this was never really about switching between two fixed identities, since both my brother and I had to constantly learn, through trial and error, how each culture defined a person’s proper place within it.

“Looking back, I now understand that this was never really about switching between two fixed identities, since both my brother and I had to constantly learn, through trial and error, how each culture defined a person’s proper place within it.”

文構造: [分詞構文: Looking back(現在分詞)], [S: I(代名詞)] [V: now understand(動詞)] [O: that this was never really about switching between two fixed identities(名詞節)], [理由の副詞節: since both my brother and I had to constantly learn, through trial and error, how each culture defined a person’s proper place within it(接続詞節)]
品詞: Looking back(分詞構文「振り返ってみると」という慣用表現)、about switching(前置詞aboutの目的語としての動名詞)、since(接続詞、理由を表す)、how each culture defined…(間接疑問文=名詞節、learnの目的語)
文末のhow節は動詞learnの目的語となる間接疑問文(名詞節)であり、how(疑問副詞)+ S(each culture)+ V(defined)+ O(a person’s proper place)という語順になっている点を確認する。

I often clashed with the unspoken rules of my Japanese classroom, ( wearing / outdoor shoes / indoors / or / addressing / an older classmate / too casually / mistakes / that seemed invisible to me / but instantly noticeable to everyone else ).

I often clashed with the unspoken rules of my Japanese classroom, wearing outdoor shoes indoors or addressing an older classmate too casually, mistakes that seemed invisible to me but instantly noticeable to everyone else.

文構造: [S: I(代名詞)] [V: clashed with(動詞句)] [O: the unspoken rules(名詞句)], [分詞構文: wearing(現在分詞) outdoor shoes indoors or addressing(現在分詞) an older classmate too casually], [同格: mistakes(名詞) that seemed invisible to me but instantly noticeable to everyone else(関係代名詞節)]
品詞: wearing/addressing(いずれも現在分詞、分詞構文でIの行動を具体的に説明)、mistakes(直前の2つの分詞句の内容を言い換える同格の名詞)、that seemed(関係代名詞節、mistakesを修飾)

  1. My parents were determined that we would grow up fluent in both languages and (comfortable) in both cultures. ※
  2. My parents eventually settled on a simple motto (capture) what they hoped for us.
  3. Both my brother and I had to constantly learn how each culture (define) a person’s proper place within it.

  1. 正解: comfortable(形容詞、変化不要)
文構造: [C: fluent(形容詞) in both languages] and [C: comfortable(形容詞) in both cultures]
  2. 正解: capturing
    文構造: [O: a simple motto(名詞句)] ← [現在分詞句: capturing(現在分詞) what they hoped for us(名詞節)]
    品詞: capturing(現在分詞、mottoを後置修飾)
  3. 正解: defined
[O: how each culture defined(動詞) a person’s proper place within it(間接疑問文)]
    品詞: defined(過去形、間接疑問文内の動詞)
how+S(each culture)+V(defined)+O(a person’s proper place)という語順を確認。

    (B) That the children would grow up fluent in both languages and comfortable in both cultures.
    (C) That the children would permanently move to Japan.
    (D) That the children would avoid all contact with Japanese culture.
  2. Which of the following best paraphrases “mistakes that seemed invisible to me but instantly noticeable to everyone else”?

    (D) Mistakes that only occurred in America, not in Japan.
  3. What does the narrator conclude, upon reflection, about the parents’ motto of being “entirely American” and “entirely Japanese”?
    (A) It meant simply switching between two completely fixed and separate identities.
    (B) It required constant, ongoing learning about how each culture defines a person’s proper place, rather than a simple switch.
    (C) It was ultimately meaningless and had no real effect on the narrator’s life.
    (D) It only applied to the narrator’s brother, not to the narrator.

  1. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “determined that we would grow up fluent in both languages and comfortable in both cultures”
  2. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “mistakes that seemed invisible to me but instantly noticeable to everyone else”
  3. 正解: (B)
本文該当箇所: “this was never really about switching between two fixed identities, since both my brother and I had to constantly learn…how each culture defined a person’s proper place within it”
