1. 「…するやり方／…する様子」の表し方
- (1) how SV
- (2) the way SV
- (3) the way in which SV：関係副詞の代わりに〈前置詞 in＋which〉を用いた表現
例：I admire the way she handles difficult customers with such patience. （あの忍耐強さで難しい顧客に対応する彼女のやり方に感心する）
＊注意：the way と関係副詞 how を一緒に用いて（×）the way how SV という表現はできない。 ＊注意：the way that SV という表現もある。この that は関係副詞の一種と理解すればよい。
2. 「それが…する理由だ／そういうわけで…」の表し方
前の文で理由を述べて、その結果を述べる表現。
- (1) That is the reason why SV
- (2) That is why SV ＊先行詞 the reason を省略した表現
- (3) That is the reason SV ＊関係副詞 why を省略した表現
例：Traffic was heavier than usual this morning. That is why I arrived late for the meeting. （今朝はいつもより渋滞がひどかった。そういうわけで会議に遅れた）
＊注意：That の代わりに This / It を用いる場合もある。

【問題1】解答：① how be impressed by の目的語となる名詞節。the way howという形は不可なので、howのみを用いた形が正しい。
【問題2】解答：① That is why 前文の内容（報告書を提出し忘れた）を理由として、その結果（上司に居残りを頼まれた）を述べる文脈。That is the reason why の the reason を省略した That is why が正しい。
【問題3】解答：③ the way in which 関係副詞の代わりに〈前置詞 in＋which〉を用いた形。the way in that という表現は存在しない。
